Perth among finalists for World's Best Cities

Perth is one of 28 finalists in the New7Wonders Cities campaign, with Quito, Casablanca and La Paz also making the cut.

The New7Wonders campaign has released its 28 official cities finalists, and Aussie punters will be thrilled to know that Perth has reached the final stages of the global election.
The team have already elected the New7Wonders of the World and New7Wonders of Nature, so it's only fitting that the next step is finalising the seven best cities of the world.
Bernard Weber, founder-president of New7Wonders, wants New7Wonders Cities to be a forum for discussing all of a city's finest features, from governance to urban planning, tourism to architecture.
The official finalists of the campaign include popular tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Athens and Barcelona, along with plenty of less frequented, but still awe-inspiring, cities.
Bolivia's high-altitude city of La Paz has reached the finals, possibly due to its breath-taking canyon and glorious Mt Illimani. It's known as Bolivia's governmental capital and is one of Latin America's fastest-growing cities.
Also making the cut is the sprawling metropolis of Casablanca, Morocco. Many tourists overlook the economic and cultural mecca, but its rapid development and cosmopolitan culture has earned the city a spot in the top 28 cities in the world.
Quito, Ecuador, has earned a spot due to its spectacular surrounds of the Andean valley and picturesque volcanic peaks. The city is split into two - the "old town" and the "new town". A 2006 restoration project has seen the "old town" restore its quaint churches and historic theatres, but still retains its working-class charm.
Quito's "new town" is a whole new world, with high rises and hotels nestled among trendy cafes and international restaurants.
And finally, the jewel in Australia's crown. Perth is our fair country's only spot to make the top 28, but what an entrance it makes. Its golden beaches, beautiful weather and combination of big-city attractions and laidback living makes for a spectacular city.  Bolstered by a mining boom, Perth continues to blossom as an incredibly liveable - and visitable - city.

There are three more elimination phases determined by public voting, and the competition ends on December 7, 2014.
